Yinarupa Gibson Nangala is a Pintupi artist who was born around 1961 at Mukula, a remote area south-west of Jupiter Well in Western Australia. Her father was renowned Papunya Tula artist, Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, and she later married another great Papunya Tula artist, Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi.
As a young girl, Yinarupa and her family lived and travelled through the region of Mukula until 1963, when they encountered a welfare patrol from the Northern Territory. Following this, she was relocated to Papunya, where she observed the early development of the Papunya Tula art movement, which later inspired her own artistic contributions.
Yinarupa began painting in 1996 after raising five sons. While her work initially gained modest attention, she achieved significant recognition in 2009 by winning the General Painting Award at the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.
Her paintings reflect the classic Pintupi style, often portraying the landscapes and significant sites surrounding her birthplace. She carefully maps out the symbols and iconography of the land and fills the remaining space with intricate dot patterns. This technique not only adds texture but also creates a sense of movement, inviting viewers to explore the layers and shimmering detail across the canvas.
