Artwork story
This painting depicts the artist’s Country, Alhalkere, about 230 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs in Central Australia. Emily was born at Alhalkere and was a lifelong custodian of the women’s Dreaming sites in her clan Country. Painted in 1993, it bears the Delmore Gallery catalogue number 93F061 on the verso.
Her colours of this period were inspired by the flowers and fruits of her Country, such as the bush plum and bush tomato. The greens may recall what Emily called “green time”, the new growth that follows rain.
As a painter Emily was a bold, unselfconscious force, unleashing colour and movement onto canvases that at their best could be sublime. Her finest paintings are entirely intuitive works, painted in furious sessions without stepping back to look. Like Pollock she painted on the ground but, unlike him, she crouched over the canvas until done. She was renowned for walking away without surveying the finished work, such was her assuredness about its content and meaning.
