Artwork story
Liddy Nelson Nakamarra was a renowned Warlpiri artist from Lajamanu in the Northern Territory, highly celebrated for her paintings depicting traditional Jukurrpa (Dreaming) stories, most notably the "Bush Bean" (Wanarri or Ngunkarli) Dreaming. Her "Bush Bean" works explore the significance of the native plant, which has historically been a vital source of bush tucker and medicine for Warlpiri women. Utilizing large, expressive, iconographic forms and bright, vibrant colors, her work reflects the unrestrained, dynamic style characteristic of artists from the Lajamanu region. Here paintings act as visual maps and stories, honouring the Yawulyu (women's ceremonial law and rituals) associated with harvesting and preparing the bush bean.
