- Artwork story
- The legend of the Bush Banana illustrates the travels of two women of the Napangardi and Napanangka moiety through country south and west Yuendumu. Ther journey ended at Pikily (Vaughan Springs) where they went underground. As the women travelled they collected Uparli fruit.
Uparli is a bush banana found in central Australia which forms an important part of the diet in certain regions. It grows on small vines which climb young trees or in rocky crevices close to dry riverbeds in spinifex country and can be eaten raw or cooked. In this painting the intricate patterning portrays the fruit bearing creeper.
