Artwork story: The Nyikina people are the Traditional Owners of the West Kimberley region in Western Australia, including the sacred river country and waterholes. Central to their identity is the Martuwarra (Fitzroy River), which hosts vital cultural sites and billabongs that serve as life-sustaining hubs on Country. The Nyikina people view the river as a living ancestral being rather than a simple water resource. They believe it was formed by the ancestral figure Woonyoomboo, who mapped the environment, named species, and created the river valley and surrounding water systems. The region contains over a thousand registered Indigenous heritage sites, with places like Murrwan acting as the "beating heart" of the landscape for ceremony, rest, and storytelling.
