- Artwork story
- Rover Thomas painted Country as a few broad planes of ochre, in deep reds and browns. His paintings often combine two views, with roads and flat ground seen from above and landforms in profile, and use white dots to outline shapes and draw the eye along the land. He did not begin painting until the early 1980s. The Krill Krill ceremony came from a dream of his, and before he painted himself he supervised Paddy Jaminji in painting its boards.
Rover was married to Peter Thomas's aunt. This portrait is part of Peter's series of portraits of the first-generation painters of the East Kimberley, and it echoes Rover's style, with a few broad planes of red, black and white edged in white dots, and a textured brown across the lower half.
