- Artwork story
- In Jack Britten's paintings of Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles), rows of white dots build up the banded hills, and bands of dots across the hills relate to the designs of ritual body painting. Body markings in his work also refer to his standing as a senior Gija lawman. This portrait surrounds him with nested arcs of salmon, yellow, maroon and black, each edged in white dots and layered like the banded hills. Britten was born at Tickelara and in 1982 moved to Frog Hollow to help establish the Wurreranginy outstation. His painting Country ran from there east to Purnululu. He is one of the first-generation painters of the East Kimberley that Peter Thomas portrays in this series.
