- Artwork story
- Joonba is the Gija word for the ceremonial cycles of song and dance that carry Ngarranggarni, the Dreaming, from one generation to the next. Performed at night, family groups gather to prepare together, and dancers are painted with mawoondool, white ochre worked into the skin by hand before they take their place in the ceremony.
Peter grew up inside this world. Raised by his aunt Madigan and by Sandy Thomas, he performed Joonba himself for the first time at just five years old. This painting carries that memory: family coming together in the dark, the ochre going on, and the dance that keeps the old stories alive.
