Artwork story: This is a collective painting by the women of Kaltjiti arts. The artists are: Gladys Roberts, Kathy Maringka, and Rita Rolley. The combination of different styles and stories create a rich tapestry of colour and mark making. It also is a reflection of the diversity and family relationships of Fregon women. Originally, all the families came from all the regions of the APY Lands to settle in the community beginning in 1961. Older women working with the younger generation sharing skills and stories through painting. Fregon Country is a vibrant landscape with long ridges of low sandhills interspersed by flat spinifex and vast, grassy plains. These in turn are criss-crossed by dry creeks lined with river red gum eucalypts creating a patchwork effect of colour and pattern and which flood during heavy rain. Rockholes are irregular, circular depressions in the rocks which fill with water when it rains. Knowledge of their location was essential to survival during nomadic times
