Artwork story: Gloria Petyarre was an extremely prolific painter influenced, no doubt, by her equally prolific aunt Emily Kame Kngwarreye, with whom she lived and worked for many years. Although Gloria remained very much in Emily's shadow during her aunt's life, she emerged as an artist of note from 1996 onward. She is said to have pioneered the depiction of Bush Medicine leaves, a theme that is now ubiquitous amongst the women of the Utopia region. Although medicine leaves paintings of today can often feature the leaves of other trees, the leaves of the Kurrajong tree are especially significant because they were traditionally used for medicinal purposes and are known to have healing properties.
