Artwork story
Jorna Newberry, niece of acclaimed Western Desert master Tommy Watson, developed a distinctive artistic voice rooted in Pitjantjatjara law and country. Her canvases, like those of her uncle, explore the ancestral landscape of Tjukurla, translating ceremonial designs into radiant contemporary abstraction.
In Ngayuku ngura (My Country), Newberry’s use of saturated blues, violets, ochres, and golds swirl across the linen in gestural layers, evoking the spiritual energy of desert lands seen both intimately and from an aerial perspective. The composition radiates movement, its shifting forms suggesting both the physical contours of country and the invisible pathways of tjukurrpa.
