Artwork story
Patrick (Olodoodi) Tjungurrayi, born at Yalangerri near Jupiter Well, was a senior lawman and ceremonial custodian for Country across Balgo Hills, Kiwirrkura and Kintore. His paintings carry the inherited narratives of the Tingari ancestors and the Wanawara (Rainbow Serpent), translated into a striking visual language of geometric precision.
In Illyatjara, luminous bands of red, orange, yellow and violet are interlaced with squared spirals and linear meanders, creating an optical vibration that evokes ceremonial ground designs as well as the enduring movements of ancestral travels. The composition exemplifies Tjungurrayi’s distinctive combination of Balgo density and Kiwirrkura geometry, a style that drew curatorial recognition following his inclusion in Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
His works are represented in major institutional collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, South Australian Museum, and Artbank, underscoring his position among the most significant Western Desert painters of his generation.
