EARLY WESTERN DESERT PAINTINGS & ARTEFACTS
We are delighted to introduce two significant early works by master painters, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa and Wimmitji Tjapanga from the Western Desert, as well as two Albert Namatjira Woomeras and a collection of desert Boards and Artefacts (c.1972 - 1980). These culturally rich pieces, crafted during the formative years of their respective art movements, encapsulate not only artistic brilliance but also ancient ancestral narratives.
The Western Desert Art Movement began in the early 1970s in Papunya when Aboriginal artists started using acrylic paints to depict traditional Dreamtime stories, cultural symbols, and landscapes on canvas. This movement transformed Indigenous art into a significant contemporary art form, gaining international recognition for its vibrant, abstract representations of ancestral knowledge and connection to Country.
